Student Welfare

 

Student Welfare’s objective is to protect the interest and well-being of Sunway University/College students regardless of racial origin, gender, age, social status or other individual differences. We liaise with the internal and external resources to support our students. This is to ensure that our students have a conducive learning environment.

Some of the situations that we assist and advice on include:

  • Abuse
  • Bullying and harassment
  • Victim of crime
  • Access to support services for student with disabilities or medical condition.
  • Conflict with students/ staff
  • Crisis intervention
  • Other welfare related matters

 

How does the University/College support you?
  • Extra time for exam
  • Extend loan period from library
  • Use word processor during exam instead of hand writing
  • A reader to read question during examination
  • Enlarge examination paper font size
  • Text to speech device
  • And more

 

What do we do?

  • Support student in making the transition to University/College.
  • Liaise with school or department of any impact that student’s condition has on the study element of the course.
  • Give recommendation and referral of a student for adjustments to examinations and assessment.
  • Offer information, advice, guidance and practical support in areas of disabilities to student, parents, school and other relevant stakeholders.

 

Why I need to declare my disability?

It would be helpful that you provide information about any disability and health condition in the application stage, so that we can make sure everything is in place and that you will have the best start.

However, it is optional to give detail on your application, and you choose to provide this information later if you prefer.

Any disclosure related to your disability will be kept confidential and will only be disclosed with your consent or when it is required by law.

Common disabilities and medical conditions at university/college

  • A specific learning disability such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia etc.
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder
  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • A long-term illness or health condition
  • A physical impairment or mobility issues
  • Deaf or a serious hearing impairment
  • Blind or a serious visual impairment uncorrected by glasses
  • Speech and language impairment

Student responsibility

  • Provide Student Welfare with the necessary documentation on a timely basis to certify the disability.
  • Meet with Student Welfare on a regular basis as agreed and arrive on time for the appointment.
  • Keep Student Welfare informed of any changes to do with their disability i.e. physical, educational, psychological or medical condition.
