Do you ever feel up against it when it comes to studying for exams and assignments?

Whether you're new to uni life or a seasoned student returning for another year, these tips will help you make the most of your learning journey.

Embrace the journey, not just the destination

It's tempting to view studying as something you only need to do right before exams or when assignments are due. But here's the thing - if you approach your studies as a continuous learning journey rather than just a means to score good marks, you're more likely to retain important information that will serve you well long after you've tossed your cap at graduation.
Instead of cramming last minute, make a habit of regularly revising throughout the semester. Not only will this help you avoid the stress of trying to learn everything at once, but it will also allow you to truly absorb the material.

Plan ahead to avoid the stress vortex

When you've got a bunch of assignments all due around the same time, it can feel like you're being sucked into a black hole of stress. The key to escaping this vortex is planning your study schedule in advance. Research suggests that our brains have a peak focus time of about 60-90 minutes. So, instead of trying to revise for hours on end, break your study sessions into chunks with breaks in between.
This will help you stay sharp and avoid burnout. Sit down at the beginning of each semester and map out your assignments, exams, and other commitments. Then, break your study tasks into manageable chunks and schedule them throughout the weeks leading up to your deadlines.

Embrace the power of the break

You might feel a twinge of guilt for taking breaks, but trust us, that guilt is misplaced. Breaks are actually your secret weapon for learning. They give your brain a chance to process and consolidate all the new information you've been feeding it, essentially "locking in" what you've learned. Plus, they recharge your focus and energy levels, so you're ready to tackle more when you return to your books. So, whether it's taking a quick walk around campus, chatting with a friend, or just zoning out for a bit, make sure to build some 20–30-minute breaks into your study schedule.

Don't skimp on self-care
It's easy to get so caught up in your studies that you neglect the other important aspects of your life. But getting enough sleep, eating well, spending time with friends, and doing things you enjoy are all crucial for not only improving your studying but also ensuring you have a well-rounded uni experience.
When you neglect self-care, you're basically inviting stress to come and wreak havoc on your ability to focus and learn. Make sure you're getting at least 6-8 hours of sleep each night, fuelling your body with enough food, and carving out time for socialising and hobbies.

Ask for help when you need it

Uni can be overwhelming at times, and it's okay to admit when you're struggling. Whether it's reaching out to your tutors for extra guidance, joining a study group, or seeking support from services in Student LIFE, don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it.
Remember, you're not in this alone. Your lecturers and classmates are all valuable resources. If you're having trouble understanding a concept or assignment, speak up. Chances are, others are feeling the same way. And don't forget about the various support services available on campus such as the counselling and wellness team, and student welfare.

Navigating uni life while trying to excel academically can feel like a juggling act at times. But by approaching your studies as an ongoing learning process, planning ahead, taking strategic breaks, prioritising self-care, and reaching out for support when needed, you'll be well-equipped to not only survive but thrive during your time at uni.

It's important to keep in mind that your journey is about so much more than just your final marks. It's an opportunity to grow, both academically and personally. So, embrace the experience, work smart, and don't forget to enjoy the ride!
