Do you find it difficult to develop effective study routines? Does it sometimes feel that no matter what you try, you just can’t seem to get a foothold on getting what you learn in class to stick?

The key to effective studying habits lies not only in understanding your unique study style but also in creating a conducive environment that enhances your learning experience.

To kickstart your journey toward effective studying, the first step is identifying your study style. Whether you're a fan of cue cards, meticulous notetaking, or a combination of methods, understanding what works best for you is crucial. Experiment with various techniques until you discover the approach that resonates most with your learning preferences.

(A personal habit of the author's is to read a few pages of a book and then take notes. That way, the information sticks better and there's no pressure to get through lots of pages and try to remember everything in one go.)

For example, you might find rewriting class notes in a more organised manner helps you to better retain information. This method might allow you to reinforce the material, as you create your own comprehensive study guide.

Alternatively, you might be someone who prefers using cue cards. Condensing information onto compact cards can help with quick review sessions, particularly before an exam or assignment. The key takeaway here is that there's no one-size-fits-all approach; it's about experimenting and seeing what works for you.

Equally important is identifying your ideal study environment. While some thrive in the quiet confines of home, others find inspiration in the ambient hum of cozy coffee shops. Experiment with different locations until you discover the spot that minimises distractions and maximises your focus. Your study environment should be a sanctuary that fosters concentration and productivity.

Time management is another critical aspect of effective studying. Avoid the pitfalls of last-minute cramming by creating a realistic study schedule. Allocate dedicated time slots for each subject, ensuring a balanced approach to your coursework. Consistency is key, so strive to maintain a steady and sustainable study routine.

Effective studying is a dynamic process that evolves as you progress through your academic journey. Stay open to refining your methods based on your experiences as you go along. Of course, it's always a good idea to seek support from peers, lecturers, or the team here at the Sunway Counselling & Wellness centre if you find yourself facing challenges in your study routine.
